Almost every Monday morning, there’s a pile of questions like this waiting in our email inbox: “I need a lawn to look great, something that my neighbours will envy. But my children want to be able to play football, and the dog needs some space too. HELP!”
Surprisingly, this isn’t as much of a problem as it sounds. These days it is possible to have a really good quality lawn, that is durable and hardwearing. Ryegrass, used in the right amount will be useful in this situation. When mixed with fescues and bentgrass, we can achieve a very tidy looking lawn that will resist lots of use.
There’s two mixtures we would recommend in this particular situation. Both Sprogs and Dogs and Tough Green are dual purpose mixtures – look great, and stand up to heavy use.
Sprogs and Dogs is the more hardwearing of the two mixtures. It’s our top-selling mixture – with good reason. Tough Green is a finer mixture, that when mown will look almost as good as a fescue/bentgrass only mixture.
Sprogs and Dogs was selected as a best buy, by the Independent newspaper. You can read more about that here.
Both mixtures will benefit from fertiliser boost prior to sowing. We suggest forking Growmore into the soil at 140g/m2. The seedbed should be left for a few days after fertiliser has been applied, to allow it to breakdown.
