We’ve compiled this list of our favourite five fertilisers.
Growmore fertiliser is a fantastic all-rounder. Great for lawns, flowers and vegetables, Growmore can be used in many areas. Growmore is the chosen fertiliser to use when establishing a new lawn. It should be forked well into the soil a few days prior to sowing. The suggested rate is 140g/m2.
Growmore is available is several sizes: 1.25kg, 2.5kg, 5kg, 10kg and 20kg.
This one is a dedicated lawn fertiliser. Supplied in 3kg boxes, each pack will treat 120m2. The fertiliser is in granular form, and can be used throughout the year, approximately every 6 weeks. The high Nitrogen formula promotes good lawn growth, helping to create a thick, dense layer of turf.
Only available in 3kg boxes, made by Vitax.
3. Blood, Fish & Bone – from £6.98
Another mixed-use fertiliser. Blood Fish & Bone is made up of traditional, natural ingredients. The fertiliser is an organic alternative to others such as Growmore. Blood, Fish & Bone provides three main nutrients; Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potash. This fertiliser can be used for lawns as a preseeding fertiliser.
Blood, Fish & Bone can be purchased in several different sizes: 2.5kg, 5kg and 10kg.
Lawn Sand is a treatment and tonic for lawns. Designed to control moss, Lawn Sand should be applied between April and September. It acts as a tonic, which encourages good green lawn growth. 7-10 days after application, any dead moss should be raked out.
Lawn Sand is available in 4kg and 20kg packs.
5. Vitax Q4 – £17.40 for 4.5kg
You might say we’ve saved the best until last. Q4 is an outstanding all-purpose fertiliser produced by industry leaders Vitax. Firstly, Q4 is fantastic for new lawns. Similar to other preseeding fertilisers, Q4 should be applied at 140g/m2. But this fantastic fertiliser isn’t just good for lawns. It will tempt your tomatoes into ripening, and reach out to your roses, encouraging abundant flowering.
