Meadowgrass is sometimes used in grass seed mixtures. There are two main species that we use in seed mixtures Rough Stalked Meadowgrass, and Smooth Stalked Meadowgrass.
Smooth Stalked Meadowgrass (Poa pratensis) is also known as Kentucky Bluegrass. We use this in mixtures because it is well suited to growing in cold damp conditions. Leaves grow from the base of the plant, and spread well offering good ground coverage. Because of its root structure, we use Smooth Stalked Meadowgrass in grass seed mixtures like Drought Buster. Smooth Stalked Meadowgrass also grows particularly well in shaded conditions, hence we use it in our Premium Shade mixture. Did you know that there are 3,000,000 seeds per kg?
Rough Stalked Meadowgrass (Poa trivialis) is used less in lawn mixtures, but more so in some of our wildflower mixtures. The plant is usually allowed to flower and go to seed, reaching around 50cm tall. Compared to Smooth Stalked Meadowgrass, the stem of the plant has rougher edges, hence the name.
